KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE FOOTBALL RECEIVES $100,000 COMMITMENT Former Panther linebacker gives to new football stadium
OWENSBORO, Ky. (April 15, 2004) * The Kentucky Wesleyan College football program received a $100,000 commitment from Travis Chaney, a 1992 KWC graduate and former Panther football player, for the new on-campus football stadium.
The new state-of-the-art facility is an integral part of the college's master plan and will include synthetic turf, permanent seating for approximately 1,200 spectators and a press box. The stadium will be ready for the Panthers home opener on Sept. 11 at noon versus Georgetown.
"The passion that my wife (Christine Taylor '01) and I have for Kentucky Wesleyan runs deep," said Chaney. "The KWC experience has afforded Christy and me many fond and memorable moments. Even today, KWC provides an outlet for me to be involved and improve upon my leadership skills as a volunteer.
"It is my wish this gift will urge others to join in the efforts to build the football program into a national contender and to continue graduating productive young men who will go out and make a difference in the communities in which they choose to live."
Chaney was a four-year starter at linebacker for the Panthers from 1988 to 1991 where he still ranks in the top five in three career defensive categories. He is fourth in total tackles (292), third in solo tackles (206) and second in assisted tackles (172) in his 40-game playing career.
The native of Owensboro, graduated with a bachelor of arts in mass communications and speech and theater and is the co-owner of Watson, Chaney and Associates, a financial branch of American Express, in Owensboro.
"Travis' generous gift to help us with the cost of the construction of our new Panther football home will serve as the catalyst to ignite former football players and coaches, fans and friends of KWC to add to his generosity," said second-year head coach Brent Holsclaw.
KWC President Wesley H. Poling added, ""We are deeply grateful to Christy and Travis for their exemplary generosity in supporting Kentucky Wesleyan's new football stadium. Their investment will help us realize a long-held dream of playing football on campus. I believe their commitment to this project sets an example for others to follow."
A campaign to raise money for the stadium will include naming rights for the stadium. It will start immediately and run through December, 2004. Cost of the project is $540,000 with $180,000 already raised. The Panthers have been playing their home games at Owensboro, Apollo and Daviess County high schools since football was reinstituted in 1983.
The stadium project joins other new facilities on campus in the last five years * Ralph Center for Fine Arts, Winchester Campus Community Center and the Hahn Center for the Sciences.
