Two-time Defending National Champion GVSU Lakers To Play In The Big House
Grand Valley State and Michigan Tech will meet for the 18th time in 2004
Dec. 16, 2003
Houghton, Mich. - Michigan Tech will host, two-time defending national champion, Grand Valley State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Nov. 6, 2004. The announcement came jointly today from Tech athletics director Rick Yeo and UM athletics director Bill Martin.
"We're really excited to be hosting a game at the Big House," said Yeo. "We've had an outstanding relationship with the University of Michigan for a long time and we're most thankful to them for making this game a reality."
Said Martin, "While this isn't something that we'll do on a regular basis, we wanted to support both Michigan Tech and Grand Valley State and work with Michigan Tech in making this happen. It will be a great game and we're pleased to showcase two sister public universities in the state and the best Division II football on our campus."
Tech football coach Bernie Anderson, who will begin his 18th year guiding the Huskies this fall, says the NCAA Division II attendance record will be on the line on Nov. 6. The current mark of 61,143 was set back on Sept. 29, 1979, when Shippensburg beat Slippery Rock 45-14, at Michigan Stadium.
It'll be an opportunity for football fans to see a game in Michigan's Big House, be a part of a historic, record-setting crowd, and see a great college game," said Anderson. "And who knows, the game could be for the conference championship."
The contest comes on the final weekend of the regular season in Division II and the game will likely have playoff implications.
Tickets for the contest will be $18, which includes a $3 handling fee. Laker fans can reserve seats with a deposit of $10. The deposit will go toward the ticket price of $18. Call 616 331-8800 to order tickets.
