Shreffler Joins Georgia Southern Football Staff
Former Ohio University standout joins Mike Sewak’s staff
STATESBORO, Ga. – Aaron Shreffler has been hired as a staff assistant coach for the Georgia Southern football program, head coach Mike Sewak announced. Shreffler, who played for Sewak at Ohio, joins the Eagle football program after seven years at the University of Saint Francis.
Shreffler, who will work with the offensive line, replaces Mark Williams who took a football coaching job at U.S. Naval Academy Prep School.
In the seven-year existence of the Saint Francis program, Shreffler served as an assistant coach on six straight Mid-States Football Association championship teams that advanced to postseason play. During those six title seasons USF posted a 63-10 overall record, 36-1 in the MSFA. USF posted an undefeated 10-0 regular season each of the last three years.
Last year USF went 13-1, losing in the NAIA championship game. Shreffler coached four First Team All-Mid States Football Association players, one All-America and the NAIA Rimington Award winner, Adam Sherman, which is given to the most outstanding lineman. In 2003 Saint Francis advanced to the NAIA semifinals finishing 12-1 while averaging 40.3 points and leading the nation in total offense. Shreffler coached a First Team All-MSFA pick and Second Team All-America.
His coaching responsibilities included: offensive line, defensive line (1998), working with the special teams and sharing recruiting duties. For the past six years Shreffler also worked as the strength and conditioning coordinator.
A four-year letterwinner at Ohio, Shreffler was the starting long snapper all four years and starting center his final two seasons. In 1996 he blocked for two 1,000-yard rushers, Kareem Wilson and Steve Hookfin. He had off-season workouts with the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars. No stranger to Georgia Southern, Shreffler worked three summer camps in addition to summer camps at Miami (Ohio) and Ohio State.
“Aaron has experience coaching in a national championship game and been associated with playoff caliber teams in recent years at Saint Francis. He’s an energizing coach and I think he will relate well with the players,” said Sewak. “He has been in the trenches with the pads on. I think the players will understand that.”
A 1997 graduate of Ohio, he received his bachelor’s degree in Sports Industry. In February 2005 he was inducted into the Celina High School Hall of Fame.
