FOOTBALL: OFFENSE SHINES IN SOUTHEASTERN’S FIRST SPRING SCRIMMAGE
HAMMOND – Southeastern quarterback Martin Hankins threw for 540 yards and the Lions’ offense racked up 751 yards of total offense in the first scrimmage of spring drills Saturday evening in Strawberry Stadium.
Hankins continued the solid play he demonstrated down the stretch of the 2003 campaign completing nearly 69 percent of his passes (44-of-64) with four touchdowns and two interceptions.
“It was really pleased with the way the offense played tonight,” replied second-year head coach Hal Mumme. “We’re pretty far along for only the fourth practice of the spring, so that is certainly encouraging. The offense won the night but we threw some wrinkles in that Woody (Widenhofer) and his crew hadn’t seen. I’m sure they’ll be ready for us next time.“
Hankins and backup Seth Babin combined to throw for 639 yards on 59-of-82 passing and spread the ball around hitting 15 different receivers. Two of the Lions’ wideouts hit 100 yards with Josh Taylor catching seven passes for 124 yards and a score while Felton Huggins pulled in eight for 103.
“I thought our receivers did a great job tonight,” remarked Mumme. “We were able to do some things in our vertical game that I was pleased with and it showed in the way we moved the ball.”
The Lions had nine pass completions of at least 20 yards including four of 30 or better – two of which went for scores.
But it wasn’t just through the air that the Lions’ offense produced as the running game, keyed by a healthy Ray Perkins and South Carolina transfer Thez Robinson, racked up 112 yards and two rushing TDs.
“I was happy to see our backs play well tonight also,” added Mumme. “I thought both Ray and Thez did a great job and A.J. (Schneider) did some real good things for us as well.”
Perkins carried the load rushing 12 times for 43 yards and a score while Robinson made the most of his touches rushing for 53 yards on two carries including a 44-yard touchdown scamper.
On the defensive side senior linebacker Marvin Jones recorded seven solo stops while defensive back Romaliz Mayo had a game-high 11 tackles. Kent Smith and Jarred Jenkins each recorded an interception.
The Lions return to practice Monday and Tuesday with 8 p.m. practices. The next scrimmage will be Saturday at 10 a.m. with the spring game set for April 1 at 7 p.m.
