KENTUCKY WESLEYAN ADDS 10 PREP FOOTBALL STANDOUTS FROM LOUISVILLE
OWENSBORO, Ky. (May 12, 2004) * First team all-state defensive tackle Alex Temple from Trinity High School headlines a recruiting class of 10 prep standouts from Louisville that will continue their academic and football careers at Kentucky Wesleyan College as announced by Panthers head football coach Brent Holsclaw.
"This is as strong a class as I've recruited at the collegiate level in nine years," said Louisville native and former Trinity High School quarterback Holsclaw. "We've done a tremendous job of recruiting some of the best talent in the state especially from Louisville."
Joining Temple will be fellow Trinity teammate Stuart Diersen; Ronnie Gray from Ballard; Corey Gant from Pleasure Ridge Park; Josh Abell, Kenneth Lewis, Anthony Rutledge and James Woodford from Manual; Joe Speer from Jeffersontown; and Andrew Streble from Holy Cross.
Temple, a 6-2, 235-pounder, earned all-state recognition from the Louisville Courier-Journal in leading the Shamrocks (11-4) to the state 4-A championship with 73 tackles including 26 for minus 126 yards and 11 sacks. Diersen, a 6-0, 193-pound, wide receiver, caught 76 passes for 889 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games for the Shamrocks and received honorable mention all-state recognition by the Courier-Journal .
Gray, a 6-1, 180-pound, defensive back, garnered Courier-Journal honorable mention all-state honors for the Bruins. Gant, a 6-2, 220-pound, tight end, earned all-district recognition for the Panthers. Abell, a 5-11, 255-pound, offensive lineman, received first team all-district honors and the Johnny Unitas Award; and Lewis, a 6-2, 290-pound, defensive lineman, was a two-time all-district performer and collected 40 tackles and two sacks in 10 games as a senior for the Crimson.
Rutledge, a 6-2, 280-pound, offensive lineman, started all 10 games and earned first team all-district recognition in 2003. Woodford, a 6-0, 170-pound, wide receiver and defensive back, earned first team all-district honors on offense and defense last season. He caught 13 passes for 248 yards and one touchdown and also amassed 53 tackles and two interceptions in 10 games. Speer, a 5-10, 250-pound, started on the offensive lineman for the Chargers; and Streble, a 5-11, 180-pound, linebacker, led the Cougars to a 12-1 record and the quarterfinals of the state Class A playoffs..
The Panthers, a member of the Mid-South Conference and NAIA in football only, will open the 2004 season at Virginia Wise on Sept. 4.
