TACKLING FOOTBALL DOUBLE HEADER OCT. 8, NORTHWESTERN EAGLE FOOTBALL SOARS INTO HISTORY

ST. PAUL, MN - What was the first collegiate football team in modern history to play two games in one day? Years from now it will be a sports trivia question. The answer? The Northwestern College Eagles from St. Paul, Minn.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, not only will the purple and gold take on two teams, but the Eagles will be the first down on the history books to attempt the feat. But one can bet that with two games in one day, the Eagles’ goal is to avoid a double overtime.

The Eagles’ line up on Saturday includes a home game on Reynold’s Field versus the Trinity Bible College Lions from Ellendale, North Dakota at Noon. Then at 7 p.m. the Eagles head down St. Paul’s Snelling Avenue to take on the Macalester College Scots.

Northwestern College Head Football Coach Kirk Talley stated, “We are excited to provide our student-athletes with an opportunity to become part of national football history. As our student-athletes graduate and move on in life, I think this is an experience they will always remember and look back on in a very positive light. With all that is encompassed in two games in one day – game plans, focus, physical stamina, endurance, perseverance – our kids are excited to tackle the challenge.”

Aside from the history-in-the-making element, the double-game Saturday, which has already attracted the eye of national media, came about because of two logistically appealing reasons: saving time and money.

“We were able to add a tenth game to the schedule without drastically extending our season, which we had been trying hard to do without success,” said Northwestern College Athletic Director Matt Hill. “Second, the opportunity to play a road game just a few miles down the road [at Macalester College] was very appealing. The Macalester game presents a better opportunity for us to use our financial resources.”
