TRINITY FOOTBALL HOSTS WILLIAMS SATURDAY IN BATTLE OF WIN STREAK RECORD HOLDERS
Hartford, Conn., Sept. 25 -- The Trinity College football team, which won, 47-0, at Bates College on Sept. 24, will host the 0-1 Williams College Ephs on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m at Jessee/Miller Field. With its 23rd triumph in a row last week, Trinity tied Williams for the New England Division III winning streak record and will break that record with a win today. The streak is also the longest in NCAA Division III and the second-longest in all of college football (Southern California – 25 wins in a row). The Bantams snapped that Eph winning streak in 1991, while Williams is the last team to defeat Trinity in the second game of the 2002 campaign. The Bantams, coached by Chuck Priore (6th season, 32-9) are currently tied with Amherst, Bowdoin, Colby, and Tufts for first place in the NESCAC at 1-0.
Trinity trails the all-time series against Williams, 34-27-2, but has won the last two meetings. Last fall, Trinity raced past the Ephs, 30-12, in Williamstown. Current Trinity senior captain defensive end Michael Blair (Plymouth, N.H.) blocked a punt and fellow 2005 senior captain cornerback Kevin Quinn (Chicago, Ill.) returned the ball seven yards into the end zone in that game. Trinity has not lost at Jessee/Miller Field since 2001 (15 straight wins).
Trinity continued its offensive dominance against Bates during the Priore era in its season opener, having put up 186 points against the Bobcats in the four Bantams wins since 2000. The Bantams recorded their eighth shutout in the last 23 games, outgaining Bates, 518 to 164, and opening up a 13-0 game at the half with 24 points in the third quarter. Senior quarterbacks Bill Schweitzer (Alexandria, Va.) and Josh Pitcher (Ogunquit, Maine) combined to complete 21 out of 28 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Schweitzer threw scoring strikes of 31 yards to sophomore Chandler Barnard (Lubbock, Texas) and 43 yards to sophomore Jeff Pratt (Swampscott, Mass.), the first touchdown of Pratt’s career, and Pitcher found Pratt in the end zone from 23 yards out. Pratt finished with a team-high 83 receiving yards on four catches. Junior back Gennaro Leo (Everett, Mass.) paced the Bantams with a 112 rushing yards on just seven carries, including a 75-yard touchdown scamper, and classmate Jordan Quinones (Pottstown, Pa.) added 54 rushing yards on nine rushes with a 29-yard touchdown run. Both of Trinity’s junior kickers, Kevin Swiniarski (Plymouth, Mass.), 35 yds, and Brett Sheridan (Glastonbury, Conn.), 22 yds, kicked field goals.
The Bantam defense allowed only 34 yards on the ground to Bates on 22 carries, as senior linebacker Ryan Albrycht (Glastonbury, Conn.) made a team-high six tackles, four for losses, with 1.5 sacks, and a pass breakup. Blair added five tackles and two sacks, while sophomore linebacker Tyler Sparrow (Wakefield, R.I.) returned his first career interception 38 yards for his first touchdown as a collegian.
