MORRISTOWN, N.J., December 3, 2005 - As part of an ongoing series throughout the fall, This Week in College Football History takes a look back at some of college football's landmark moments over the last 137 years.
Throughout the season, many of these items are depicted in a changing exhibit at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.

Kansas State's dream comes up a few yards short
Dec. 5, 1998: Many believed the third edition of the Big XII Championship Game in December 1998 would serve as the defining moment in Coach Bill Snyder's masterful rebuilding job at Kansas State University. Taking over a program just nine years earlier that had struggled in big-time college football since the very beginning, Snyder led the Wildcats to the verge of one of the greatest turnarounds in college football history.
Kansas State started their game undefeated and ranked #3. During the second quarter, the stadium found out that #2 UCLA fell to Miami, 49-45. This left the Wildcats needing just one more victory to secure a spot in the inaugural BCS Championship Game against Tennessee. With a 27-12 lead over Texas A&M heading into the fourth quarter, Kansas State looked to be on their way to the Fiesta Bowl.
But the Aggies had other ideas, rallying for two quick touchdowns and a two-point conversion to tie the game at 27. The Wildcats completed a 57-yard pass as time expired in regulation, but receiver Everett Burnett was tackled at the two-yard line to force overtime. After successful field goal tries by each team in the first overtime, Kansas State kicked a field goal in the second OT to take a three-point lead.
With the ball back and trailing by three, the Aggies lost seven yards on its first two plays and faced 3rd and 17 from the 32-yard line. But Sirr Parker caught a slant from QB Brandonn Stewart and raced into the end zone for the game, and Big 12 Championship, winning touchdown. The loss dashed the championship dreams of Kansas State, who fell to #4 and an Alamo Bowl berth against Purdue, where they subsequently lost. Florida State, meanwhile, had the good fortune of rising from #4 to #2 and earning the spot in the BCS Championship Game, where they lost to Tennessee 23-16.
Other notable moments to occur This Week in College Football History:
Dec. 5, 1992: The SEC becomes the first Division I-A conference to stage a championship game as Alabama defeats Florida, 28-21, in Birmingham.
Dec. 6, 1930: Notre Dame defeats USC, 27-0, in Coach Knute Rockne's final game. Rockne would die in a plane crash the following March, finishing his career with a 105-12-5 record.
Dec. 6, 1969: #1 Texas defeats #2 Arkansas, 15-14, on their way to a perfect 11-0 season and a national championship.
Dec. 7, 1985: In the closest Heisman Trophy balloting in history, Auburn's Bo Jackson edges Iowa QB Chuck Long to become the trophy's 51st recipient.
Jackson receives 317 first-place votes and 1,509 total points to Long's 286 first-place votes and 1,464 points.
With 119 chapters and over 12,000 members nationwide, The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, a non-profit educational organization, runs programs designed to use the power of amateur football in developing scholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement in America's young people.
NFF programs include the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind., Play It Smart, The NFF Center for Youth Development Through Sport at Springfield College (Mass.), the NFL-NFF Coaching Academy, and annual scholarships of nearly $1 million for college and high school scholar-athletes.
