WINGATE UNIVERSITY RELEASES 2004 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

WINGATE UNIVERSITY RELEASES 2004 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University vice-president for student affairs and director of athletics Steve Poston and head football coach Joe Reich have released the 2004 Wingate University football schedule.

This years Bulldog football schedule features five home games and six away games. The Bulldogs will open the 2004 campaign with two first-time opponents: West Virginia Wesleyan College and Webber International University.

The Bulldogs kick-off the 2004 season at Buckhannon, W.Va. for the WVWC game on August 28. Game time is 1 p.m. The Webber International game will be the teams home opener at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on Saturday, Sept. 4 (1:30 p.m. kick-off).

West Virginia Wesleyan is an excellent team, Reich said. This will be a tough opener for us. Webber International is a new challenge for us as well.

Following the Webber International game, Wingate University will host NCAA Division I-AA Jacksonville (Fla.) University Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m. In 2003, the Jacksonville Dolphins rallied for a 42-38 home win. Our fans will enjoy a high-scoring game when we play Jacksonville, Reich said.

The Bulldogs will finish non-conference play on Saturday, Sept. 18 with a trip to NCAA Division II independent North Greenville College. The Crusaders will begin the 2004 season with a new stadium (Younts Stadium) and a new coach (former Newberry mentor Mike Taylor).

Coach Taylor has a history in the SAC, Reich said. We expect a tough game against North Greenville.

The Bulldogs finished the 2003 season with a 5-6 overall record and a 2-5 record in the South Atlantic Conference regular season. The Bulldogs are looking to improve their status in the SAC. Coach Reich believes the team is ready to make a move in the league wars.

We open the SAC schedule with a home game against Tusculum College, Reich said. There are no easy games on our schedule. The SAC is a tough conference from top to bottom. I feel the quality in our league is unmatched in NCAA Division II.

Tusculum visits Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field for a 1:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Sept. 25. Following the home contest with Tusculum, Wingate will visit league foes Lenoir-Rhyne College (Oct. 2) and Catawba College (Oct. 9).

Tusculum and Catawba shared the 2003 SAC regular season title with Carson-Newman College. All three teams compiled 6-1 overall records in the league wars. Wingate defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 38-14 on Oct. 11, 2003 at Wingate.

Wingate will return to Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field for SAC home games against Mars Hill College (Oct. 16) and Newberry College (Oct. 23). Both games begin at 1:30 p.m. Mars Hill compiled a 7-4 overall record in 2003. Newberry is making great strides under second-year head coach Zak Willis. Newberry is Wingates 2004 homecoming opponent.

The Bulldogs will conclude the 2004 campaign with road games at Presbyterian College (Oct. 30) and Carson-Newman College (Nov. 6). The Bulldogs defeated Presbyterian 21-13 on Nov. 8, 2003 as a part of the Universitys homecoming festivities. Carson-Newman compiled an 11-2 overall record in 2003 and represented the SAC in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Wingate will set its sights on the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2004. The postseason begins on November 13 and runs through the national championship game on December 11 in Florence, Ala.
