Defensive Trio Named To Academic All-District Football TeamALAMOSA, Colo.- Three members from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's top-ranked defensive unit have been named to the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District VII® Football Team, as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) on Thursday. The list of Adams State College Grizzlies includes senior defensive back Daryl Drinkwater (Hemet, Calif.) and senior defensive linemen and repeat winners Josh Olsen (Greeley, Colo.) and Adam Warren (Dove Creek, Colo.). Olsen was also named to the second team in 2004 while Warren made the first team.
Drinkwater has a 3.75 GPA and is majoring in English with an emphasis in communications. As one of ASC's starting cornerbacks, the 6-foot, 195-pounder led the team and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in pass breakups with nine. Named as an honorable mention All-RMAC selection earlier this week, he also made 39 tackles, including 22 of the solo variety.
Drinkwater, a 2001 Hemet High School graduate was also named to the RMAC's All-Academic Team last week and has been on the A.D.'s honor roll after each of his three semesters at ASC since transferring from Mt. San Jacinto (Calif.) Junior College in January, 2004. He is minoring in athletic coaching.
Olsen, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound defensive end played in all 11 games of the season making 13 tackles on defense and special teams units. He also recorded a 12-yard sack. Olsen, a 2001 Greeley Central High School graduate, has been even more impressive in the classroom, recording a 3.76 GPA while majoring in biology. He has been named to the RMAC's All-Academic Team during each of the past four years and has been on the A.D.'s Honor Roll during all eight semesters of his ASC career.
Warren, a 6-foot-2, 245-pounder, sports a 3.39 GPA while majoring in biology. He earned his second straight All-RMAC honor earlier this week and was placed on the second team. In 2005, Warren finished second on the team in total tackles with 67. He also recorded five sacks and was involved in 18 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, good for third place in the RMAC. Warren also forced two fumbles, tied for seventh most in the RMAC, and recovered two others to share the RMAC lead.
He has been on the RMAC's All-Academic Team three times, including once for wrestling, and has been on the A.D.'s honor roll after all four of his completed semesters at ASC since transferring from Division I-AA Northern Arizona University. Warren was an Honorable Mention All-RMAC selection in 2004.
Aided by these three players, the Grizzlies led the RMAC in total defense for the third straight year. They also led the RMAC in sacks for the third straight year with 38.
Nominations and voting for these awards were conducted through the CoSIDA membership. One of eight districts from across the nation and Canada, District VII is made up of nine states (Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming) as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The college division includes all NCAA Division II, III and NAIA institutions in those states.
To be nominated for the award, a player must have reached sophomore standing, been at the institution for one full academic year, have a 3.2 GPA and be a starter or key reserve. Most of those selected far exceed the 3.2 GPA requirement.
