East Texas will be the setting for national football history in August
Tyler, TX (August 29, 2004) – East Texas will be the setting for national football history in August with high schools from California and Texas opposing each other for the first time. Participants in the four-game East Texas Football Classic will be unveiled Thursday in a press conference at the Tyler Chamber of Commerce
The inaugural East Texas Football Classic will be held August 26, 27, and 28 at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.
The four-game East Texas Football Classic begins with East Texas powers Gilmer and Longview Pine Tree on August 26, the opening night for Texas high school football. Wylie and San Diego Mira Mesa will follow on August 27, becoming the first-ever matchup between the nation’s top two states for producing Div. I-A football talent (Texas and California) nationally.
The doubleheader on August 28 will begin with John Tyler renewing its rivalry with Texarkana Texas, followed by Port Arthur Memorial and Tyler Lee in the Classic finale.
Coaches from each of the eight high schools in the 2004 East Texas Football Classic, which produced an impressive cumulative mark of 66-33 during the 2003 season, will attend the press conference.
The four-game, three-day event was created and is managed by Dallas-based TITUS Sports Marketing for the Tyler Independent School District.
