NAIA Realigns Regions III and XII
Move to affect Midwest and Southeast
OLATHE, Kan. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is realigning regions within the 14 governing regions throughout the country. The Council of Athletics Administrators and the Council of Affiliated Conferences and Independents approved the realignment at the June 2005 meeting. The realignment will affect the Great Plains Athletic Conference located in the Midwest and schools in South Carolina and will be effective for the 2005-06 academic year.
The entire Great Plains Athletic Conference will move from Region IV to Region III. The 13 GPAC schools are located in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota and will compete alongside the Dakota Athletic Conference from North and South Dakota. The move ensures balance of schools between the two regions, with Region III totaling 26 institutions while Region IV will maintain 21 member schools. The two regions will begin the process of developing Region Management Committees to govern the regions.
Three schools from South Carolina, Allen University, Morris College and Voorhees College, will move from Region XIV to Region XII. The move will provide less travel time for regional competition as Region XIV is comprised of schools in Florida and Georgia. The three affected schools are situated in the top half of South Carolina. Region XII membership consists of institutions throughout North Carolina, Virginia and the eastern parts of Kentucky and Tennessee.
Since 1999, the NAIA membership has been grouped in 14 regions, averaging from 20-25 member schools in each region as part of the Association’s Regional Alignment. This move marks the first time that an entire conference has been assigned to a new region.
A leader in the development of student-athletes, the NAIA is committed to changing the culture of sport through Champions of Character. Founded in 1937, the NAIA continues to be a pioneer in implementing exceptional standards for academics, diversity, and character. Today, the NAIA sponsors 23 collegiate championships in 13 sports for its nearly 300 member institutions throughout the United States and Canada.
