THIS WEEK IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY: SEPT. 19 - SEPT. 25
MORRISTOWN, N.J., September 20, 2005 – As part of an ongoing series throughout the fall, This Week in College Football History takes a look back at some of college football’s landmark moments over the last 137 years.
Throughout the season, many of these items are depicted in a changing exhibit at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.

Stewart-to-Westbrook stuns the Wolverines
September 24, 1994: The Colorado Buffaloes visited Ann Arbor during the third week of the 1994 season entertaining thoughts of a second national championship in five years. Through the first three quarters, however, #4 Michigan dashed many of those hopes, and the #7-ranked Buffaloes found themselves down 12 with under four minutes to go.
But CU scored a touchdown, stopped Michigan on the ensuing series and began their final drive on their own 15-yard line with 15 seconds to go. A few plays later, down to their final snap at their own 36, Buffs quarterback Kordell Stewart dropped back and launched a 64-yard Hail Mary that deflected off WR Blake Anderson into the arms of WR Michael Westbrook as time expired to beat Michigan, 27-26. Colorado finished that season 11-1, with only a late-October loss at Nebraska spoiling their championship dreams.

September 20, 1984: Trailing Utah 40-14 with nine minutes to go in the
ballgame, Washington State rallies to score four touchdowns and wins, 42-40.
September 21, 1991: Dustin DeWitt of Iowa Wesleyan attempts 86 passes and
completes 61 against Harding. He runs 13 times and sets NAIA records for most plays, pass attempts and pass completions in a single game.
September 24, 1955: In a match-up pitting national champions from the
previous two seasons, #5 Maryland (1953 champions) upsets #1 UCLA (1954
co-champions) 7-0, in Maryland.
September 24, 1983: Pat Brennan of Franklin intercepts nine passes against
Saginaw Valley State.
September 25, 1971: In their first home game since the devastating plane
crash of a Marshall University football charter plane the previous November that took the lives of 75 passengers, including 38 players and five coaches, Marshall defeats Xavier 15-13. A stirring late-rally, capped by a touchdown on the final play of the game, gives the Thundering Herd the victory in their emotional home opener.
September 25, 1920: California beats Olympic Club, 21-0, starting a 50-game
unbeaten streak that spans six seasons and ended with a loss to Olympic Club, 15-0.
With 119 chapters and over 12,000 members nationwide, The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, a non-profit educational organization, runs programs designed to use the power of amateur football in developing scholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement in America’s young people.
