PHOENIX FOOTBALL PLAYERS BREAK WEIGHT ROOM RECORDS

ELON, N.C. - Elon strength and conditioning coach Keith Caton has announced the setting of several football program weightlifting records during the Phoenix's annual spring testing held recently in the Elon Strength Training Center. All weightlifting marks are based on a single repetition.

Freshman linebacker Chad Nkang (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) posted a program-best 345-pound power clean for a single repetition. Other Phoenix players tallying a 315-pound or better power clean were junior tailback Ronnie Dargan (Jacksonville, N.C./White Oak) at 340 pounds, junior center Brandon Mason (Martinsville, Va./Martinsville) at 335 pounds, junior linebacker Calvin Sutton (Grifton, N.C./North Lenoir) at 330 pounds, sophomore defensive lineman Emerson Fazekas (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) at 325 pounds and sophomore offensive lineman Bob Cooke (Princeton, N.C./Rosewood) at 315 pounds.

Mason established a new single-repetition squat record for the Phoenix at 585 pounds. Other Elon players squatting over 500 pounds were freshman defensive lineman Robbie Goins (Laurinburg, N.C./Scotland County) at 560 pounds, freshman offensive lineman Demario Reid (Farmville, N.C./Farmville Central) at 545 pounds, freshman defensive lineman Michael Singleton (Wando, S.C./Hanahan) at 535 pounds, Sutton at 515 pounds and Dargan at 510 pounds.

Freshman offensive lineman Hunter Jenks (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest Rolesville) and sophomore fullback Wesley Fulmore (Hope Mills, N.C./South View) each set a single-repetition program record with a 385-pound bench press. Jenks also registered a single-rep school record with a 340-pound incline bench press. Dargan and junior defensive lineman Chris Bell (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley) finished the closest to Jenks, each putting up a 325-pound incline bench press.

Sophomore defensive back Lawrence Chetty (Roanoke Rapids, N.C./Roanoke Rapids) recorded new program bests in both the vertical jump (40.5 inches) and the broad jump (10 feet, 10 and 1/2 inches). Freshman Dan Brooks (Monroe, N.C./Piedmont) and junior Derek Neal (Forrest, Va./V.M.I.) each completed the pro shuttle run in 4.19 seconds for the best-ever performance by a Phoenix wide receiver. Sophomore Mike Sheley (Greensboro, N.C./N.C. State) finished the pro shuttle run in 4.22 seconds, turning in the program's best time by a linebacker. At 4.04 seconds, freshman Danny Boback (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) narrowly missed the team's defensive back record in the pro shuttle run, set by freshman T.J. Clegg (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) in 4.03 seconds last fall.
