Head Coach Don Patterson
Career/school record: 41-18, entering sixth season

The only head coach in Western Illinois history to win at least 40 games in his first five seasons, Don Patterson has guided the Leathernecks to three playoff berths, a pair of Gateway Football Conference titles and a No. 1 national ranking, elevating the program to the level of a national I-AA powerhouse. His 41 career victories (41-18, .695) are the third-most in school history and his .695 winning percentage in the fourth-highest among the 24 Leatherneck head coaches.

Last season, Patterson guided the Leathernecks to their second straight quarterfinal appearance in the I-AA playoffs, finishing with a 9-4 record. After a 34-12 win at I-A Eastern Michigan, the Leathernecks earned the school’s first No. 1 ranking in the I-AA national polls. It took a 35-7 loss at eventual I-A national-champion LSU (a game in which the Leathernecks were down only one, 14-13, late in the third quarter) to knock Western out of the top spot, but the Leathernecks remained in the top three throughout the majority of the season. A 43-40 overtime win at Montana in the first round of the playoffs propelled the Leathernecks into a quarterfinal round matchup at Colgate. Played in 10” of snow, Western fell 28-27. Quarterback Russ Michna earned his second straight Gateway Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year honor and finished sixth in the Walter Payton Award voting, and linebacker Lee Russell finished fifth on the Buck Buchanan Award ballot. A large factor in Western’s rise to national prominence has been its performance against I-A opponents. Patterson is the nation’s only active I-AA coach with four I-A wins over the last five years, having led the Leathernecks to a 4-3 record against I-A teams in five seasons as head coach. He defeated Northern Illinois in his very first game in 1999, defeated Ball State in 2000, Northern Illinois again in 2002 and Eastern Michigan last season. The Leathernecks have played at least one I-A team each season since 1993, and have won four of the last seven.

In 2002 Patterson earned his second Coach of the Year awards from both the Gateway Football Conference and the American Football Coaches Association (regional winner), leading Western to an 11-2 record. After being picked fourth in the Gateway preseason poll and 40th in the national rankings, the 2002 Leathernecks flirted with perfection. Both losses were suffered on the final play from scrimmage, and Western came within five points of an undefeated season. Patterson’s squad became just the third team in 99 years of Leatherneck football to win 11 games as Western captured its fourth Gateway crown in the last six years. Key victories over I-A Northern Illinois, nationally-ranked Western Kentucky and Youngstown State helped the Leathernecks climb as high as No. 2 in the national polls.

Northern Illinois boasted the highest Sagarin rating of the eight I-A teams that fell to I-AA opponents, and was the only I-A team from that list with a winning record. Shutouts over No. 14 Western Kentucky and No. 23 Youngstown State marked the first time in school history that Western had shut out two nationally ranked teams in the same season.

Patterson has put together four of the top six scoring teams in Leatherneck history, including the 2003 squad which averaged 36.3 points per game, the highest average in over 50 years. The 2003 offense ranks second in the all-time record books, behind only the 37.4 points per game scored by the 1951 squad. The 1999 (34.8 ppg), 2000 (32.5 ppg) and 2002 (36.2 ppg) teams also rank among the top six Leatherneck scoring teams of all-time.

Promptly establishing the best record for a first-year Leatherneck coach in over 20 years, Patterson guided his 1999 squad to a 7-4 record, winning the first three games in which he coached. He also became the first Leatherneck I-AA coach to record a winning season in each of his first two campaigns after earning a 9-3 record in 2000.

In his third year at the helm of the Leathernecks, Patterson established the top passing team in school history, averaging 285.5 yards per game and surpassing the previous record, set in 1988, by nearly 15 yards per game. The 2001 squad also ranked sixth in the history books in total offense per game, averaging 393.9 yards.

Patterson has led five of the top 11 offensive teams in school history, as the 2003 Leathernecks averaged 416.7 yards of total offense per game, ranking third. Four of the top 10 Western Illinois passing teams, including three of the top six, have come under Patterson’s tutelage, as the 2003 squad averaged 247.0 yards per game, ranking fifth in the school record book.

Head Coach Don Patterson
Gateway Coach of the Year: 2000, 2002
In his second year, Patterson was able to lead the Leathernecks to an undisputed 2000 Gateway title. As a result, he was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award, and was named the Gateway Conference and American Football Coaches Association Region 4 Coach of the Year. Patterson guided the Leathernecks to the league crown after the team was picked fifth in the Gateway preseason poll, becoming the lowest-picked team to ever win an outright title. Picked No. 23 in the top 25 poll, the Leathernecks rose as high as No. 3 with an eight-game winning streak which marked the fourth-longest streak in school history.

In his first two seasons, Patterson coached three Leathernecks to five Gateway players of the year awards and one national honor. Edgerton Hartwell earned back-to-back Gateway Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1999 and 2000, and capped his career with the Buck Buchanan Award as the nation’s best defensive player in I-AA. Patterson also coached Charles Tharp to a pair of Gateway honors -the 1999 Newcomer of the Year and the 2000 Offensive Player of the Year.

The Leathernecks swept the Gateway’s postseason awards in 2000, as Patterson was named Coach of the Year, joining Tharp and Hartwell on the honors list. Patterson’s third award winner was current Leatherneck Lee Russell, who was named the 2000 Gateway Freshman of the Year. The Leathernecks became the first team in Gateway Conference history to win four of the conference’s five postseason awards in a single season.

Patterson also kept the Western Illinois tradition of sending players to the National Football League intact when two Leathernecks were not only drafted, but were the first two I-AA players taken in the draft. Will Peterson became Western’s third-highest draft pick when he was selected by the New York Giants in the third round, and Edgerton Hartwell was taken in the fourth round by the Baltimore Ravens.

Patterson became a member of the I-AA Football Board of Directors in July 2001, representing the Gateway Conference on the panel.

Patterson came to Western Illinois from the University of Iowa where he served for 20 years under Hayden Fry, working as the offensive coordinator for the last seven years after serving in a variety of assistant coaching positions. During his 20 years at Iowa, the Hawkeyes appeared in 14 bowl games, including three Rose Bowls. The 1985 Iowa team was ranked No. 1 in the nation for five weeks, en route to a school-record 10-win season.

Under Patterson’s guidance, the Iowa offense was explosive, leading the Big Ten in rushing (217.0 yards/game) and scoring (34.3 points/game) while finishing second in pass efficiency in 1997. Iowa finished the 1997 campaign ranked eighth in the nation in rushing offense and ninth in scoring, and had its highest pass efficiency ranking of any Iowa team since 1985.

Patterson was instrumental in Iowa’s success, making the Hawkeyes one of only three Big Ten teams (also Ohio State and Michigan) to play in 14 bowl games during his tenure. Iowa appeared in the Rose Bowl after the 1981, 1985 and 1990 seasons, and made eight consecutive bowl appearances from 1981-88. The success of the Hawkeyes was immediate upon Patterson’s arrival with Fry, evidenced by a Rose Bowl berth in their third year in Iowa City (1981), which was Iowa’s first Rose Bowl appearance since 1958. Iowa ranked third among Big Ten teams in victories from 1979-99, and was one of three Big Ten teams to win more than 100 games between 1984-98.

Since 1979, the Hawkeyes produced 38 first team all-Big Ten selections, as well as six special teams first teamers. Six Hawkeyes were first round NFL draft picks during Patterson’s stay, with five others going in the second round and seven more in the third. Patterson directly coached five of Iowa’s top seven career receivers, with the other two playing during his time.

Prior to being named offensive coordinator, Patterson coached the Iowa tight ends - two of which, Marv Cook and Jonathan Hayes, have enjoyed lengthy NFL careers.

Patterson was the last member of Fry’s original Hawkeye staff. His association with Fry began in 1978 as an assistant at North Texas State coaching the defensive secondary. He joined Fry, serving in the same capacity, at Iowa in 1979. He served as recruiting coordinator in 1980 before coaching tight ends in 1981, a segment he coached until he began instructing quarterbacks and receivers in 1989.

Patterson was born on December 10, 1950 in Corsicana, Texas. He graduated as valedictorian from Blooming Grove High School in 1969 and earned a Congressional appointment to the United States Military Academy. The 1973 West Point graduate served on the cadet honor committee and was named to the highest-ranking cadet staff while at the Academy. He and his wife, Lisa, have a daughter, Brooke, who is a pharmacy student at Purdue University.

Mark Hendrickson
Assistant Head Coach
Offensive Coordinator
Quarterbacks
Wide Receivers
Kickers
In five seasons as Western Illinois’ offensive coordinator, Mark Hendrickson has virtually rewritten the Leathernecks’ offensive record book, producing four of the top six scoring teams in school history, four of the top seven offensive teams and four of the top 10 passing teams, along the way tutoring two of the top three all-time running backs and three of the top seven quarterbacks.

Hendrickson also developed two Gateway Conference Offensive Players of the Year, including quarterback Russ Michna who won back-to-back awards in 2002 and 2003. Running back Charles Tharp was named the 2000 Gateway Player of the Year after rushing for 1,555 yards - the second-highest total in school history. Michna threw for 3,037 passing yards and 23 touchdowns in his first season as a starter, and followed with a school-record 3,160-yard, 21-touchdown season as a senior. Last season’s offense combined a threatening combination of a 3,000-yard passer and a 1,000-yard rusher as running back Travis Glasford became the first sophomore in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards. Two of Westen’s three 1,000-yard receivers, Frisman Jackson (2001) and Stacy Coleman (2002) have come under Hendrickson’s tutelage. Hendrickson, who also coaches the Leatherneck punters and kickers, developed punter Mike Scifres into just the second player in school history to earn three first-team allconference honors. Scifres averaged a school-record 43.5 yards per punt during his four-year career, garnered consensus all-America honors as a senior in 2002, and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the 2003 NFL Draft. Placekicker Justin Langan also earned first-team all-America honors in 2002 as he set a I-AA record for most points scored in a season by a kicker (116). Langan is on pace to become the school’s all-time leading scorer and set school records for most career field goals, most career extra points.

Hendrickson’s 2001 offense is the top passing team in Western Illinois history, averaging 285.5 yards per game, while his 2002 passing offense (243.0 ypg) ranks sixth and his 2003 mark (247.0 ypg) ranks third. The 36.3 points per game scored in 2003 is second only to the 1951 team (37.4 ppg), and ranks just above the 2002 mark of 36.2 points per game. All five of Hendrickson’s squads rank among the top 11 most productive offenses in school history, including the 2003 mark of 416.7 total yards per game which ranks third.

Hendrickson began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Georgia Tech in 1983 under Bill Curry, working with running backs and wide receivers. From 1987-89 he served as the assistant line coach and special teams coordinator under Bobby Ross, and was part of Georgia Tech’s 1990 national title team as the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator, and held the same position in 1991.

He joined the Iowa staff in 1992, spent the 1993 season as Southeast Missouri State’s offensive coordinator, then returned to Iowa for a five-year stint under Hayden Fry. As Iowa’s running backs coach, Hendrickson tutored Ladell Betts, who broke the school record for most rushing yards by a freshman in 1998.

Hendrickson served as the special teams coordinator during his entire tenure with the Hawkeyes, coaching Nick Gallery, the Big Ten’s leading punter in 1995 and 1996. Hendrickson worked with return specialist Tim Dwight, who was a consensus All-American after leading the nation in punt return average in 1997.

While coaching the Iowa tight ends, Hendrickson instructed 1995 all-Big Ten selection Scott Slutzker, who was a third-round draft pick by Indianapolis. Hendrickson has coached in six bowl games, winning five. Georgia Tech won the 1985 All-American Bowl, the 1991 Florida Citrus Bowl (1990 national championship game) and the 1991 Aloha Bowl while the Hawkeyes won the 1996 Alamo Bowl and the 1997 Sun Bowl. Iowa also appeared in the 1997 Sun Bowl.

He served as an assistant coach at Clinton (Iowa) High School in 1981-82, and at Cedar Falls (Iowa) High School in 1980. The Richland, Iowa, native attended Pekin (Iowa) High School and graduated from Northern Iowa with honors in 1980, then earned his master’s degree from UNI in 1982. Hendrickson was a four-year letterwinner for the Panthers, starting three seasons at wide receiver. Hendrickson and his wife, Ericka, have two sons, Myers and Davis, and a daughter, Georgie.

Jeff Jamrog
Defensive Coordinator
Linebackers
Former Nebraska assistant Jeff Jamrog enters his first season as the Western Illinois defensive coordinator after spending the last four seasons as the Huskers’ defensive line coach.

The Husker defense was ranked second in the nation last season in scoring defense, allowing just 14.46 points per game (second only to LSU), and led the nation in turnover margin (1.77), pass efficiency defense (88.66) and pass interceptions (32). Nebraska tallied a schoolrecord 47 takeaways, just one shy of national-leader Washington State.

Nebraska went 10-3 in 2003, including a 17-3 Alamo Bowl victory over Michigan State, holding six of its opponents to seven or fewer points and recording a pair of shutouts.

In addition to his defensive line duties, Jamrog served as the special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach in 2003. The Huskers’ special teams unit led the Big 12 last season in net punting and kickoff return yardage. Including his three years as defensive special teams coach, Jamrog coached the Huskers to 13 punt return touchdowns (8 returned punts, 5 blocked punt returns) and 21 blocked kicks over the four-year period, and produced all-America punt returner Dejuan Groce. Before joining the Husker staff, Jamrog spent three years as the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach at New Mexico State.

From 1994-96 he served as the defensive coordinator at Nebraska-Omaha, helping the Mavericks to their first outright conference championship with a school-record 10-2 mark and a No. 4 national ranking in his final season. Jamrog also spent four seasons (1990-93) as an assistant at South Dakota.

A defensive lineman at Nebraska from 1983-87, Jamrog walked on to the freshman team in 1983, redshirted in 1984, then lettered the final three years of his career. During his varsity playing career the Huskers were 29-7 and appeared in a bowl game every year, recording a pair of Sugar Bowl victories in 1985 and 1987. Jamrog recorded 66 tackles, eight sacks and 13 tackles for loss as a senior, earning firstteam academic all-America and academic all-Big Eight honors. He then began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Huskers during the 1988 and 1989 seasons.

The Omaha, Neb., native earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Nebraska in 1987 and a master’s degree in business administration in 1990. He and his wife, Connie, have three children, Elizabeth, 13, Brett, 11, and Jared, 9.

Kerry Cooks
Defensive Backs
One of the bright young stars in collegiate coaching, Kerry Cooks joins the Western Illinois staff for his first season as the Leathernecks’ defensive backs coach after serving as an assistant at Kansas State last season.

Cooks joined the Kansas State staff as a graduate assistant in January 2003, working primarily with defensive game preparation and assisting with the Wildcats’ secondary during their Big XII championship season.

The 11-4 Wildcats finished the year ranked sixth in the nation in total defense, eighth in scoring defense, 12th in pass efficiency defense and 17th in rushing defense while earning a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The K-State defense allowed just four touchdowns in the last 24 quarters of the regular season and limited each of its last six opponents to 14 points or less, including the nation’s most prolific scoring offense, Oklahoma, which was held to just seven points. The Wildcats also held four of their final six regular season opponents under 200 yards of total offense and led all of Division I-A in sacks with 51.

Recruited by Don Patterson at Iowa, Cooks was a four-year letterwinner for the Hawkeyes from 1994-97, earning first-team all-Big Ten recognition as a safety and being named the team’s most valuable defensive player as a senior in 1997. He helped lead the Hawkeyes to bowl games in each of his last three years, including wins over Washington in the 1995 Sun Bowl and Texas Tech in the 1996 Alamo Bowl, and an appearance in the 1997 Sun Bowl. Iowa finished in the nation’s top 25 in both 1995 and 1996, ranked No. 18 at the end of the 1996 campaign. Cooks earned his bachelor’s degree from Iowa in 2000.

The Irving, Texas, native was drafted in the fifth round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings and played safety and special teams for the Vikings, Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons during his threeyear NFL career. He and his wife, Valencia, were married in July 2002.

Ronnie Harmon
Running Backs
Ronnie Harmon wasted no time on the Western Illinois coaching scene, producing the school’s first 1,000-yard sophomore rusher in his first season with the Leathernecks. Harmon is entering his second season as Western Illinois’ running backs and fullbacks coach after an illustrious career in the NFL.

Sophmore running back Travis Glasford rushed for 1,368 yards and 20 touchdowns on his way to becoming an all-conference honoree and the first sophomore in Western Illinois history to average more than 100 yards on the ground per game. Glasford also tied the school record of five rushing touchdowns in a game and rushed for a career-high 230 yards against Youngstown State. The Leathernecks’ 169.7 rushing yards per game in 2003 was the highest total since 2000.

Harmon’s success in the professional ranks spanned twelve seasons (1986-97) and included a long list of accomplishments. After being selected in the first round of the 1986 NFL Draft (16th pick) by the Buffalo Bills, Harmon went on to even greater productivity with the San Diego Chargers. Voted team MVP in both 1991 and 1992, he also earned Pro Bowl status in 1992. Harmon was instrumental in the Chargers’ drive to the Super Bowl in 1994, and went on to finish his career in 1997 as one of the most productive backs ever to play in the NFL. His 597 career receptions leave him fourth among all running backs in NFL history, while his 6,254 receiving yards and 2,804 rushing yards assure him of a prominent place in NFL record books for years to come.

After his retirement from the NFL, Harmon began his coaching career as an assistant in the high school ranks, working with running backs in San Diego (Horizon) and New York City (Holy Cross).

The Bayside (Queens, N.Y.) High School product earned all-city, all-conference and all-state honors in football before achieving even more success at the University of Iowa from 1982-85. In the process of earning first-team all-Big Ten and first-team all-America honors, Harmon was twice named Most Valuable Player while leading Iowa to four consecutive bowl games. His college career finished on the highest note possible, as he led the Hawkeyes to a No. 1 national ranking for five consecutive weeks in 1985 and to a berth in the Rose Bowl as Big Ten champions. In two seasons as a wingback and two as a tailback, he became Iowa’s all-time leading receiver (146 receptions for 2,045 yards), second-leading rusher (2,271 yards) and second-leading scorer (192 points). He set school records of 32 career touchdowns and 32 consecutive games with a touchdown catch.

2004 WESTERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL SPRING PROSPECTUS
Josh McCall
Offensive Line
Former Western Illinois University letterwinner Josh McCall enters his first season as Western Illinois’ offensive line coach after serving three seasons as the assistant line coach.

As the assistant line coach from 2001-03, McCall helped develop an offense that produced four of the top six scoring teams, four of the top seven offensive teams and four of the top 10 passing teams in school history. Both the 2002 squad, which averaged 36.2 points per game and the 2003 squad, which averaged 36.3 ppg, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the I-AA playoffs. Last year’s 36.3 points per game, 247.0 passing yards per game and 416.7 yards of total offense per game, each rank among the top three all-time school marks, and running back Travis Glasford became the first sophomore in Western Illinois history to rush for 1,000 yards.

McCall was a three-year letterwinner and a two-year starter at center for the Leathernecks, anchoring an offensive line which paved the way for playoff success in 1998 and scoring success in 1999. In 1998, the Leathernecks advanced to the semifinal round of the I-AA playoffs - further than any other Leatherneck team. With McCall over the ball, the 1999 team averaged 34.8 points per game - then the second-highest mark in school history, only to the 1951 team. Running backs Aaron Stecker (1998) and Charles Tharp (1999) rushed for 1,506 and 1,311 yards, respectively, behind McCall’s offensive lines, then the third and fourth-highest rushing totals in school history.

As the assistant line coach, the Macomb, Ill., native worked one season under Scott Anderson and two seasons under Rod Holder, and played one year under current Buffalo Bills assistant Dan Neal. McCall was a two-time GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree and was a Burger King Scholar Athlete as a senior. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Western Illinois in 1998, and graduated with a master’s degree in computer science in 2002.

Parker Wildeman
Defensive Line
Parker Wildeman, has returned for his second stint as the Leathernecks’ defensive line coach after leaving the same post following the 2000 season.

Wildeman, who was Patterson’s first defensive line coach at Western from 1999-2000, departed Macomb for Reno, Nev., allowing his wife, Christine, to pursue her profession as a medical doctor. During their three years in Reno, Parker, a certified strength coach, spent his time in private business as a personal fitness trainer.

The 2000 Leathernecks won the Gateway Football Conference title with a 9-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in league play. They held their opponents to 19.3 points, 141.0 rushing yards and 299.3 total yards per game, the best mark in 10 years, and climbed as high as No. 3 in the national polls.

Prior to his first stint with the Leathernecks, the former Iowa defensive lineman was the Hawkeyes’ assistant strength, speed and conditioning coach from 1996-98. In 1995 Wildeman served an internship with the University of Iowa Alumni Association while also serving as a graduate assistant with the athletic department strength program. He earned his master’s degree in athletic administration in 1996 and his bachelor’s degree in education in 1994.

During his Hawkeye playing career, Wildeman earned second team all-Big Ten honors and was selected as Most Valuable Player as a senior. He was honored with the Chicago Tribune Iowa MVP award, and earned the Forest Evashevski Scholastic Achievement Award and the Coaches Hustle Award for defense in his final season.

Wildeman is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the NSCA. In addition, he is a certified Olympic-style weightlifting coach.

Wildeman and his wife, both natives of Cherokee, Iowa, have two sons, Tate and Piper. Christine will be continuing her medical profession in Carthage, Ill.
